A red paper mache daruma. This lucky daruma has been loved since the Edo period as a symbol of "business prosperity," "safety for the family," and "sure victory." It is also known as a daruma for fulfilling one's wishes, and there is a custom of filling in the left eye with one of the wishes, and then filling in the right eye when the wish is fulfilled. "Hariko" is a doll or mask made using an ancient method in which paper is stretched over a mold, allowed to dry, removed from the mold, and then painted. The main steps in making a doll are: making a clay prototype → molding it with plaster → correcting the mold → wetting and layering Japanese paper and letting it dry → stretching the Japanese paper → gluing → painting → finishing.
