While sitting on a special rock on the shores of Lake Tahoe, a huge bear suddenly stopped a short distance away from him, stared directly at him for a moment, and decided to move together without confrontation. This magical experience had to be some kind of sign, and prompted Tom to explore the meaning of this encounter. Tom soon learned that bear crossings are considered a sign of good luck and symbolize strength, while also serving as a guide for many who are stuck. Tom had his doubts. He knew this was his opportunity to start his own shoe company founded on this great animal. The name BEARPAW is a homage to his chance encounter with a bear in Tahoe. Shortly thereafter, a BEARPAW boot style called the EVA was born. Since then, the EVA has evolved into the ELLE boot, which remains the most popular shoe style in the company's collection.
