A shining monumental work in the history of Japanese shojo manga, "The Rose of Versailles" Serialized in Weekly Margaret (Shueisha) from 1972-73. Set in 18th century France, this historical epic tale of love and struggle centers on Queen Marie Antoinette and Oscar, the youngest daughter of an aristocratic family but raised as a boy, alongside fascinating characters like Andre and Fersen, set against the backdrop of the turbulent times leading up to the French Revolution. Its grand scale and splendid, romantic content, unlike anything seen in shojo manga up until that point, earned it enthusiastic support from readers and made it a huge hit.
Furthermore, in 1974, the Takarazuka Revue adapted it for the stage, which enjoyed an unprecedented run, and in 1979, a live-action film adaptation was made, directed by the master Jacques Demy and filmed on location in France. The TV anime version, also produced in 1979, was a huge hit overseas.
The series transcended gender and age barriers, sparking the nationwide social phenomenon known as the "Rose of Versailles," and even today, in the 21st century, it remains beloved by countless fans as an immortal masterpiece.
Now, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the start of serialization and the 50th anniversary of author Riyoko Ikeda's debut (both in 2017), The Rose of Versailles will be published in a seven-volume "Deluxe Limited Edition" series as a special publication. While the series has been published in numerous paperback formats, including paperback, A5, and pocket editions, this marks the first time it has been published in the full-size B5 format it was serialized in. Produced on high-quality paper and incorporating the latest printing technology, this book not only delivers the impact of a large screen, but also meticulously reproduces Ikeda's signature, elegant pen strokes down to every strand of hair, fold in a character's dress, and every lace pattern. This unparalleled book offers the same realism as if you were looking at a manuscript that had just been drawn.
The beautifully bound and bound hardcover is finished with gold foil. All frontispieces are included for the first time within each issue's main text in their original serialization size, and all color pages are also reprinted. This edition faithfully reproduces the original serialization page layout. Each volume will include a new interview with Riyoko Ikeda, and there will also be a comprehensive gallery filled with cover art, previews, and related illustrations from the original serialization. The ultimate deluxe book that every Rose of Versailles fan has dreamed of at least once has finally become a reality.
Ikeda herself has described The Rose of Versailles as "a monument to my youth."
