Uwajima Castle, located in the deepest part of the Uwa Sea, was built in 1596 (Keicho 1) on the site of Itashima Marukushi Castle by Todo Takatora, who built it around 1601 (Keicho 6) as his first castle. It is a style of castle built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Takatora was later transferred to Kokubu and began construction of Imabari Castle in 1602 (Keicho 7).
After Takatora, Tomita Nobutaka took over, and in 1614 (Keicho 19), Date Masamune's eldest son, Hidemune, took over, and the name of the castle was changed from Itashima to Uwajima.
In 1676 (Kanbun 6), the second lord, Munetoshi, carried out extensive renovations to the castle, replacing the watchtower-style keep originally built by Takatora with the three-story, three-tiered tower-style keep that remains today.
